So, I found out what is wrong with me...I have Celiac Disease.
If you're not familiar with what Celiac disease is, it's where you are allergic to anything that has gluten in it...which comes mostly from wheat but can also be from other things.
And you wouldn't believe how many things have wheat in them-it's not just the yummy fluffy sugar cookies and delightfully crusty bubbly pizza that I'm going to miss, but it's hidden everywhere!
Just tonight I had to go the the heath food store to get soy sauce. Did you know soy sauce had wheat in it? I didn't until now. The other day I got through half a bottle of juice before reading the label like I should of, and sure enough...gluten-IN JUICE!!! So yeah, I pretty much read every single label of everything I ingest from now on.
Anyways, I am super grateful that my Dr. was able to figure this out. Some people go a very very long time before being diagnosed and sometimes it's too late. Celiac disease can cause a whole list of tumultuous side affects... including osteoporosis, infertility, arthritis and even cancer. It's crazy to me that I was born with this and am just finding out now that I have this serious condition-but like I said, I am so grateful to know now so that I can control it. Celiac disease is very controllable but you just have to completely cut gluten out from your diet. It can be a hard task but it's definitely worth it to make your body whole again.
So if I come to your house and decline your yummiest cookie or delicious fettuccine please just know that I would love some, but that it's pretty much poison to me. And who loves poison? Not me. Sorry :)
Anyways, 1 in every 133 people have it and like 97% of people who do have it don't know they do. So here is a list of symptoms. I'll put a star by my main symptoms. But if you have a handful of these symptoms and don't know whats wrong and have been feeling poopy, I would suggest being tested.
- Abdominal cramps, gas and bloating*
- Anemia*
- Borborygmi (stomach rumbling)
- Coetaneous bleeding
- Diarrhea
- Easy bruising*
- Epitasis (nose bleeding)
- Failure to thrive
- Fatigue or general weakness*

- Foul-smelling or grayish stools that are often fatty or oily
- Gastrointestinal symptoms*
- Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
- Hematuria (red urine)
- Hypocalcaemia/ hypomagnesaemia*
- Infertility
- Iron deficiency anemia*
- lymphocytic gastritis
- Muscle weakness*
- Muscle wasting
- Nausea
- No obvious physical symptoms (just fatigue, overall not feeling well)*
- Osteoporosis
- Pallor (unhealthy pale appearance)*
- Panic Attacks
- Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage)
- Stunted growth in children
- Vertigo
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Vitamin K deficiency

Also, Celiac disease is hereditary therefore if you are related to me, there is a chance that you could have it too. Im going to have Auri tested as soon as I can.
I'll be honest, I'm a little bummed. But, I am so grateful to know now and to be able to control it. Im sure that I will start feeling better soon and that is a good feeling!

oh wow. Talk about having self control...at least it will make you feel better now that you know what is wrong!
...think of it as a good weight loss plan (no cookies, pasta, etc would be good for me probably :)
Good luck and hope it helps you feel better!
I'm glad it's something you can control with diet! And I'm glad you caught it before it turned into something worse. We'll be testing our kids soon as well. I have a feeling Max might have the same thing.
Kylee I am so glad they found out what has been going on. I am happy soon you will be feeling better.
sounds like you'll have to try pizza factory's "veggie noodles" and "crustless pizza"
aw, KY! My sister Ashley's mother in law has this disease and its so hard for her to find the right food to eat.. that would be so tough, hang in there though, it should get better with time!
you have such a good attitude about it! glad you're feeling better!
I was tested for this last year, and I was both happy and dissappointed that I didn't have it (Disappointed because it would have been nice to have some answers.)
I hope you start feeling better soon, and that you can find some great food staples to keep you going. What a lifestyle change.
That's crazy ky, I'm sure it will be an adjustment but if anyone can deal with a disease like this in the "yummiest" way possible, it's you!
I'm interested in getting tested myself, how did they test you?
They do a blood test first and if it comes back positive then they usually do a biopsy of the small intestine. I haven't had a biopsy...yet?
So, just curious...can't you just buy gluten free products? I know there are a lot more gluten free products out there these days because more and more people are trying to stay away from gluten. There is also a lot of gluten free recipes as well. I even saw one for chocolate chip cookies ; ) I guess you'll just have to volunteer more of your own cookin for church activities and parties. Who knows, there might be someone else there that doesn't eat gluten that might appreciate your gluten free food. Just wanted you to know there is hope! Then maybe you could post recipes you like for us all to try. I hope you start feeling better soon. Good luck!
Yeah, there are a lot of products now that are gluten free. Already I've tried some but I have also already realized that it's kind of hit or miss with the products too. I bought some bread that seriously was like eating the sole of a shoe-it was that rubbery! I threw it away. The other problem with the products is the price. I bought a box of cookies that was 4 dollars and another loaf of bread to try that was 5 dollars(and it's the size of 1/3 a regular loaf of bread). Im gonna try recipes soon but first I have to get all the ingredients for the flour. Yes, I need a recipe for flour. So, there are a lot of new products that make life much easier for a Celiac...I guess its just weeding out the sawdust and rubber and finding things that actually taste normal.
Fruit, veggies, meat, cheese, sugar...all taste wonderful still! :)
I have some recipes coming your way for cookies and other yummies. I have even tried some of the ones my friend Amber has made and I didn't know they were gluten free (peanut butter oatmeal cookies, lemon bars). She has been doing this since she was 15, so she has lots of ideas and stuff. And hey, you can still eat a lot of types of candy, right?? :)
Hope you are feeling some relief soon or already. And if I know anyone who has enough discipline to eat right when they want to, it's you. Love ya!
Wow. I am sorry, yet,I am understand the satisfaction you must have in knowing whats going on. Did you know that Erin Neville started a Gluten-Free blog? I hope start feeling well now! I didn't even know you weren't feeling good, you must have an awesome attitude!
That is just well, poopy. You will have to pack your lunch when you come to Disney land with us! Did you hear that Andrea's family and mine are staying at Matt and Nikis house?? It is going to be fun. You need to come hang out lots.
kylee I found some glutenfree flour today in my travels. It is the red mill brand. Check it out and you could make cookies and bread. -mom
Ah! What a bummer! But, you sound like you have a good attitude about it all. I've known a number of people who have it. It's just good that you know what is going on with your body now instead of just feeling bad.
That's good that you finally have an answer to not feeling so good. Too bad it took this long though. I usually run into some gluten free recipes in my searches, I'll have to send them your way. Also, if you go to safelygatheredin.blogspot.com they have some great ideas, though few, about what to do with food storage when you have celiac and occaisionally post some gluten free recipes.
